Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have what it takes to join PACT?
Anyone interested in supporting emergency communications in Provo may apply. Amateur radio experience is helpful, but it is not required to get started.
Do I need a license to join?
Not necessarily. While most roles require an amateur radio license, there is always room for others to support PACT operations as a scribe or message runner.
What kind of training is involved?
PACT has a certification program designed to help members improve their knowledge, skills, and operational capabilities. The program emphasizes participation in training nets and exercises because these provide valuable hands-on experience. Additional training is also provided during quarterly interface meetings.
How much time does PACT require?
Members are generally encouraged to participate in weekly training nets, quarterly interface meetings, and occasional exercises or events. Training nets typically last 15–20 minutes, quarterly interface meetings are approximately one hour, and exercises generally range from 3–6 hours.
What are the expectations for PACT members?
- Participate in training nets, interface meetings, and training exercises when able.
- Work toward obtaining a Technician amateur radio license from the FCC.
- Become familiar with communication procedures and personal equipment.
- Demonstrate professionalism during operations and exercises.
What equipment will I need?
Members are not required to purchase equipment to get started. However, many members eventually choose to use a personal radio and related equipment as they become more involved. Visit the Equipment page to learn more.
